Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
No, you don’t need a referral to see a psychologist. However, if you have a referral (called a Mental Health Care Plan) from your GP or psychiatrist it will allow you to claim a Medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions per year.

How many sessions am I entitled under a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP)?
You are entitled to receive 6 sessions with your initial Mental Health Care Plan. After you complete them, your psychologist will provide a brief report to your referring GP/Psychiatrist and advise them if you would benefit from further sessions. In this instance, you may be entitled to a further 4 sessions.
Can I claim my session from both Medicare and my Private Health Insurance?
No, you cannot claim it from both for each single session. You can only choose either Medicare or Private Health Insurance to claim your rebate for the session.
Can I claim rebates on the spot?
For “Medicare rebates”, we can process the rebate online for you provided that you have linked your nominated bank account with Medicare.
For “Private Health Insurance”, we will issue a receipt in order for you to claim the rebate with your private health insurance company.
